When Is the Best Time to Come to
Lake Fork, Lake Monticello or
Lake Welsh?
On Lake
Fork, the best time to land a lunker bass is during February, March,
April, May, and June. The summer time is just as good, but the day time
temperatures in East Texas can be stifling; therefore, it is necessary
to pursue the lunkers during the night. Bass start moving shallow
during the warm days in late February, with large numbers of bass
getting ready to spawn in the northern sections of the lake. Spawning
continues throughout the lake until the end of April.
On Lake Monticello and Lake Welsh, both are power plant “hot water”
lakes, the best time to
land a lunker bass is during November, December, January, and February.
The water
temperatures average 60°-70° during the winter months, creating
some great bass fishing action because the bass are very aggressive due
to the warm water temperatures.

Lake Fork History
The dam
was started in September 1975 and completed in November 1978. Lake Fork
opened to the public in September 1980. The lake reached full pool in
February 1986. Lake Fork has 315 miles of shoreline, which is mostly
wooded. There are no stripers or sand bass in Lake Fork. The Texas lake
and state record fish was caught in January 1992 by a crappie fisherman
and weighed in at 18.18 lbs!
The lake has approximately 27,690 acres of
water. Large tracts of timber were left uncut, Florida strain
fingerlings were planted, and brood stock ponds were made. The filling
of the lake was done in stages and took more than 5 years to complete.
The gradual filling of the lake enhanced the spawning of the Florida
largemouth bass.
Lake Fork and Lake Monticello have a slot limit of 16"
to 24", which means caught bass that measure within this range must be
returned to the lake. Five bass smaller than 16" may be taken from the
lake, or one bass larger than 24" and four bass smaller than 16" may be
retained each day. Five-pounders are very common, and many trophies of
more than 10 lbs. are boated!
